Research Group SynaptoOscillopathies

TeamCaliskan is a young team with a broad interest in cellular and circuit-level alterations in rodent models of fear and anxiety disorders. We use electrophysiology, behaviour, immunocytochemistry, pharmacogenetics and chemogenetics (DREADDs) as experimental methods. Our current research focuses on identification of physiological and pathological alterations in the hippocampal activity patterns and synaptic plasticity and their relation to modulation of hippocampal engrams.

Our future work will aim to tackle fundamental questions in “brain-body interaction” by building causal bridges across the disciplines of neuropsychiatry and memory dysfunction with gut physiology and immunology.

Antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis leads to activation of microglia and impairment of cholinergic gamma oscillations in the hippocampus

We show that long-term antibiotic treatment can alter the activity and abundance of microglia - main immune cells of the brain - and impair hippocampal synaptic transmission and network oscillations.
